The Rules we use in Poodle Predictor:

This is just a quick list of the main Rules we applied. If you know a rule is incorrect, or something is missing, please send a mail to richard.b@gritechnologies.com

• The <title> tag is used as heading. We use the first 65 characters, rounded down to the nearest complete word. If no <title> tag is available (bad point), the first 65 characters of text on the page are used. (The description meta tag seems to be used if nothing else is available, but we haven't implemented meta tags yet)

• <a><img alt="text" /></a> The alt attribute is used, if it is in an image, used as a link, other alt tags are not used (although they are probably important for Google's image search).

• The same applies to the title="link description" attribute.
The Above two rules have not been fully implemented in Poodle yet.

• <h1> to <h3> headings carry extra importance. (Do other H tags or the <b> <strong> tags carry extra weight too?)

• <hn> can be styled smaller with css, not using font tags.

• <noscript> contents is used, so messages like "Your browser doesn't support Javascript" will show in Google's listings.

• <noframes> content is not used. Framesets are however not supported properly either. Individual pages will be spidered if they are linked to externally. (If anyone has more detailed info on Google's level of support for frames, let me know).
Meta description and keyword tags are used on frameset pages.

• Not more than 2 arguments should be used in the query-string of dynamic URLs.

• All HTML comments, Javascript, Cookies, CSS and Flash will be ignored.

• More than 100 links on a page are not advised. - (giving warning to be implemented)

Advise from Google:
Avoid hidden text or hidden links.
Don't employ cloaking or sneaky redirects.
Don't load pages with irrelevant words.
Use "If-Modified-Since" HTTP header - be nice to Google

The hierarchy of weight given to keywords:
1) Page title
1) Anchor text
2) Linked alt text (close behind)
3) Header tags
4) Bold body text
5) Normal body text
6) Title of link/image/etc tags (almost zippo)
6) Unlinked alt text (probably zippo)
(According to newsgroup posts.)

• Pagerank has a lot of effect on your listings - search google for info on this.
